The custom Joinery design brief
The homeowners at Goolagong Street wanted a kitchen with a British cottage feel that reminds them of home, something warm and characterful rather than sleek and minimal. The budget meant laminate benchtops and melamine doors rather than stone and polyurethane, so the design had to do the work of making those materials feel considered and personal, not like a cost cutting compromise.
The design solution
Cabinetry and hardware
- Melamine doors in a matte finish, chosen for durability and an easy clean surface at a fraction of the cost of a polyurethane finish
- Laminate benchtops in a woodmatte finish, giving the warmth of timber grain without the sealing and maintenance a solid timber benchtop needs
- BLUM Legrabox soft close drawers fitted throughout, so the budget conscious finish choices don’t come at the cost of how the kitchen actually feels to use because premium hardware is used regardless of the cabinetry materials so there is a smooth operation that is soft close but also long lasting. The BLUM Legrabox has a 70kg runner which is the heaviest on the market.

- LED lighting fitted inside these cabinets with glass shelves, turning everyday glassware and jugs into a lit display feature rather than hidden storage
Storage that works
- Inner drawers fitted inside the pantry, keeping bread, cereal and everyday items at arm’s reach instead of buried behind taller jars and tins
- Bin drawers with an inner storage drawer, keeping bin liners and cleaning supplies close to where the bin actually is
- Colour panels fitted under the overhead cabinets, tying the copper hardware and glass display cabinets together as one finished look rather than separate design decisions which is a unique design feature that we created so that it hides the cabinet carcase underneath with a more refined finish.
Why these design choices were made
Every material choice on this kitchen was picked to hit a $20,000 budget without the kitchen looking or feeling like a budget job.
Melamine and laminate cost less than polyurethane and stone, but the finish quality depends entirely on how they’re detailed. The woodmatte laminate benchtop was chosen specifically to bring warmth into the space, since a plain white or grey laminate would have pushed the kitchen toward the clinical look the homeowners wanted to avoid. Pairing it with copper handles rather than a more common black or chrome does the same job from the hardware side, adding warmth and a period feel that a laminate benchtop alone can’t achieve while still using premium hardware to fit into their budget.
The fluted glass cabinets with LED lighting are the standout decision in this kitchen. Rather than spending the budget on premium door materials throughout, it was concentrated into one feature run of cabinetry that gives the whole kitchen a lifted, considered feel. Colour matching the cabinet interior to the benchtop means that feature reads as intentional the moment the doors are open, not as leftover paint or whatever colour was cheapest.
The pantry and bin drawer inclusions came from the same thinking as any WilRoy kitchen regardless of budget. A pantry with inner drawers and a bin with its own storage drawer are the sort of details that get used every single day, so they were prioritised ahead of finishes that only get looked at.
Why custom joinery is a better choice compared to a flat pack
A tighter budget is often where homeowners assume custom joinery isn’t an option, and default to flat pack or a volume supplier instead. This kitchen is a good example of why that assumption doesn’t always hold up.
Flat pack cabinetry at this price point usually means a narrow range of door colours and handle styles, with little room to introduce a specific look like the British cottage feel wanted here. Feature elements such as fluted glass doors with internal LED lighting generally aren’t available at all, and the standard cabinet sizes can leave gaps in an older home like this one where the room isn’t built to a modern standard layout.
Volume kitchen suppliers sit between flat pack and custom, but they’re still working within a fixed range. Getting a specific handle style, a colour matched cabinet interior and a laminate finish that reads as warm rather than plain usually means picking from whatever combinations the range allows, rather than choosing each element on its own merits.
Custom joinery meant every one of those decisions, the laminate colour, the copper hardware, the fluted glass, the internal LED lighting, could be selected individually to build toward one cohesive look, even while keeping the base materials at the more affordable end. The budget went into the choices that mattered most to how the kitchen would feel, not spread evenly across every surface.
This project shows that custom doesn’t automatically mean expensive. It means the money gets spent where it has the most impact, and everything else is built to fit properly and last, backed by a workmanship warranty either way.
