Paul Royal’s journey into the world of custom joinery wasn’t a typical one, but it was built on a foundation of hard work, hands-on experience, and a passion for craftsmanship.
/ The beginnings
Growing up in Wollongong on the NSW South Coast, Paul was always active—whether it was riding BMX bikes with friends or taking on small jobs from a young age, including car washing, lawn mowing, and working at McDonald’s. By 16, after getting his driver’s licence, he found a new passion in motoring, but his dedication to hard work remained constant.
Crafting things with wood started in Year 10, 11 and 12 where he finished 1st in Woodworking each year. After completing Year 12, Paul was introduced to the world of joinery through a family connection. He started his apprenticeship at WHY Designs, where he learned the trade from the ground up.
His journey didn’t stop there—he went on to work for a larger company, gaining valuable experience in high-volume production, before moving to a mid-sized firm that specialised in more intricate, detailed joinery work.
Along the way, his travels took him to Wales and New Zealand, where he took on part-time jobs that further broadened his experience and perspective.

By 2014, Paul had reached a turning point. He had built up a loyal base of clients who kept coming back for his craftsmanship and ability to design joinery solutions that maximised space and functionality. With growing confidence in his ability to design, manufacture, and install custom cabinetry to suit any space, Wilroy Kitchens and Joinery was born.
Paul’s approach to providing joinery services in Wollongong and the NSW South Coast is simple: every space should be both beautiful and practical. He takes pride in transforming homes with custom cabinetry that not only fits seamlessly but enhances everyday living.
